With this announcement University of Prishtina, “Hasan Prishtina”, Norwegian Helsinki Committee and Community Building Mitrovica (CBM) invites all interested individuals to apply for participation in one semester course on Human Rights and Intercultural Understanding.  The aim of this course is to enhance knowledge of the human rights activists and all individuals interested in the filed on human rights and intercultural understanding, and peace building including here the students who end the studies, individuals working in education, social, religious institutions, local authorities, NGOs, journalists and similar agencies.

 PUBLIC CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR STUDENTS AT WORK

 for attending a one semester course on Human Rights and  Intercultural Understanding

The aim of the course is the acquisition of knowledge on intercultural understanding, human rights and peaceful resolution of conflicts, the development of democratic culture based on the aforementioned values.

The expected outcome is that the course participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of, and insight into intercultural understanding, human rights and peaceful conflict resolution ;
  • Be able to work on improving intercultural understanding and respect for human rights in Republic of Kosovo, the international community and their own lives ;
  • Gain the knowledge and skills that will help them to actively and positively participate in the life of a multicultural community ;
  • Acquire theoretical knowledge about the nature of empirical and normative aspect  in a multicultural community and situations, and coexistence with people who have different values, customs and traditions ;
  • Gain an understanding of conflict and conflict resolution at the global, national, local and individual level and transitional justice ;
  • Gain the skills and conflict management readiness for peace conflict resolution ;
  • Gain insight into the active method as a new type of approach to education in the areas above and practicing their skills in formal education.

The course is designed so that the more thematic units of processing the most important aspects of multiculturalism, human rights and reconciliation will be discussed.

The thematic areas to be covered are:

  • The concept, definition and historical context of human rights ;
  • Human rights in the philosophical and constitutional perspective;
  • The content of the key human rights ;
  • Protection of human rights by the Ombudsman ;
  • National, regional and global protection of human rights;
  • International monitoring / implementation mechanisms and human rights ;
  • The concepts of intercultural understanding;
  • Explanation and discussion of the central terms (culture, identity, individual and group, nation, nationality and nationalism, ethnic groups, ethnicity, national majority, segregation, assimilation, integration, pluralism, ethnocentrism, prejudice, xenophobia, cultural chauvinism, racism, tolerance and the like );
  • Tolerance as a necessary factor of intercultural understanding;
  • Peaceful resolution of conflicts ;
  • Concept and types of conflicts ( conflict based on a global, regional and local level, conflicts at the individual level )
  • The logic of peace education ;
  • Culture of memory ;
  • Media as a factor of peace and stability;
  • Education for intercultural understanding, human rights and peaceful resolution of conflicts;

Upon completion of attendance the students will write an essay on a selected topic concerning thematic units processed during the course. Academic coordinator will support the technical aspects and the content- making essay.

All participants and attendees to meet their obligations in the course will be awarded certificates by the Norwegian Helsinki Committee and the University of Prishtina “Hasan Prishtina”.

The number of participants is limited. The course will be attended by 25 participants, selected on the basis of applications submitted by applicants. At admission, due care will be paid to the  proportional representation participants of both sexes, as well as members of different ethnic and religious communities’. Attending the course is free.

This activity is being implemented by University of Prishtina “Hasan Prishtina” Faculty of Law as a part of the regional programme „Build Bridges not Walls: The Role of the Universities in Peacebuilding”. The project is initiated by the Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC) and financially supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

CBM is a partner NGO in Kosovo in cooperation with partner University of Prishtina “Hasan Prishtina”. 

The course will be conducted in Albanian language

ABOUT INITIATIVE:

Since January 2012, the Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC) has implemented the regional programme „Build Bridges not Walls: The Role of the Universities in Peace building“ in cooperation with partner universities and non-governmental organizations in Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. One of the planned activities is to offer a course on Human Rights and Intercultural understanding. The first group of twenty five (25) students attended the course in the spring semester of the academic year 2012-2013 and the second group of twenty five (25) students at work will commence the course in the fall semester of the academic year 2013-2014.
