About CBM:

Community Building Mitrovica (CBM) is a local non-governmental organization (NGO) operating in the field of peace and community building in the wider region of Mitrovica, northern municipalities of Kosovo. CBM aims to facilitate contact and dialogue between citizens in the whole of Mitrovica municipality. CBMs staff consists of devoted citizens – both Serbs and Albanians – who grew up in this region and want to restore the previous confidence and even friendship that war and politics have destroyed.

By supporting many concrete projects that address the direct needs of the local communities, CBM contributes modestly to this aim. The work of the past years has gained the organization a strong reputation on both sides of the Ibar River. Fields in which CBM works are: media, culture, youth, women, minorities, dialogue, and return of refugees and IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons).

CBMs projects are open to members of all communities living in Mitrovica and wider. CBM often cooperates with other NGOs, helps with local initiatives, and works with local governmental institutions and international organizations to initiate, develop, and implement activities, for the benefit of the communities, in Mitrovica and wider.

About the project:

The IEK (Interethnic Education in Kosovo) project contributes to improved interethnic relations by strengthening dialogue and exchange in educational spaces in multiethnic municipalities of Kosovo. By focusing on children in primary education (6-10 years) and including their parents, this project aims to build stronger interethnic relations.

 

Additionally, 20 young pedagogy graduates will be working at the municipal level in schools with kids. As facilitators, they will be organizing afterschool activities with 20 children from several classes within the school. The title of the activities is “Celebrating diversity through arts, music, sports, (drama theatres, board games, etc.)” Through these activities, Young Professionals will teach pupils about diversity and multiculturalism and will gain valuable experience by working with children.

Part of the activities with school children will be a multi-ethnic drawing exhibition, including school children, parents, and teachers. This event will be organized at the end of the school year, or the beginning of the next academic year.

A conference with 30 participants will be held at the end of the project.  

The overall goal of the IEK project is to contribute to more social rapprochement in Kosovo.

The IEK project is implemented in partnership with CACH and is possible thanks to the financial contribution of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The geographical coverage from this project is the following: Municipalities of Fushe Kosova/Kosovo Polje, Kamenica, Obiliq/Obilic, Prizren and Shtrpce/Sterpca.

Over the course of 5 months, twenty (20) young professionals from various ethnic backgrounds, who are building careers in the fields of pedagogy and psychology, will participate in an interethnic professional exchange in primary schools alongside twenty in-service educators. These professionals will work from the project guidelines in implementing extracurricular activities for elementary school students that promote a better understanding of interethnic cooperation and peacebuilding. By engaging young professionals (psychology and pedagogy profile) in practice in multi-ethnic schools, the aim is to build their competencies in creating and applying resources and addressing the topic, of interculturalism through practical class activities. This will be achieved with the help of in-service educators, who will serve as mentors for these young professionals during the internship process. During the exchange of experiences of both parties, in-service educators will advance professionally on the topic of multiethnicity. Before the engagement within the schools, the young professionals will be

 

provided with capacity building and information through 5 workshops, and in cooperation and through the mentorship of an expert it will be conducted a social research study.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Young Professionals will be working on the inclusion of excluded and disadvantaged children within the classroom.
  • As facilitators, they will be organizing afterschool activities with 20 children from several classes within the school. The title of the activities is “Celebrating diversity through arts, music, sports, (drama theatres, board games, etc.)” Through these activities.
  • Young Professionals will teach pupils about diversity and multiculturalism gaining valuable experience by working with children.
  • Young Professionals are expected to send weekly and monthly reports as well as timesheets in which the time of work will be tracked.
  • Will work from the project guidelines in implementing extracurricular activities for elementary school students that promote a better understanding of interethnic cooperation and peacebuilding.
  • The young professionals will be participating in five workshops to create activities for students related to the overarching theme of the project. The workshops will focus on effective communication to create intercultural communication competence when working with parents and students. The workshops will also factor in information on how to ethically collect research data over the duration of the project for a research report that fairly and accurately reflects the state of attitudes among students, parents, and school officials.
  • Together with an expert a Social research study will be developed where the young professionals will simultaneously be trained and mentored on how to conduct research and quantitative/qualitative social measurements among the school officials and parents to compile data for a comprehensive research publication for further reflection on the state of social perceptions on ethnic reconciliation in education.

 

More than 240 schoolchildren are expected to be supported on multiculturalism by Young Professionals throughout the 15 schools in 5 different municipalities.

Requirements:

The following are the criteria for selection of Young Professionals:

  • Students in 3rd year of study or graduates (Young Professionals (interns) are recent graduates or students in their last year of studies who want to gain more professional experience as teaching assistants who work with school children);
  • Young Professionals are expected to be graduates in/from various fields of study (pedagogy, psychology, speech therapist, social work, education, science);
  • Students with GPA above 8.0;
  • Students attending extracurricular activities;
  • Internship experience from 3 to 6 months working with children.

Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse ethnic group of individuals, including staff and management.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in response to changing circumstances.
  • To be able to work with children ethically and professionally, Young Professionals are trained by professionals before the internship in schools.
