Students of "Access Program" join #trashtag challenge for the Earth Week

To mark the International Earth Week , thirty five CBM’s “Access Program” students joined #trashtag challenge, the latest social media trend addressing littering, one of the biggest environmental issues in Kosovo and worldwide.

Students organized two clean up actions; one in the south Mitrovica which took place on Thursday and the other one in north Mitrovica which took place on Saturday.

The group of students started the action in south Mitrovica main park by collecting trash, cutting the grass and cleaning up the space. Additionally, they participated in a presentation about the environmental issues our society is dealing with, enriched by the guest speaker Dimitri Diagne (Fullbright assistant) who further explained the greenhouse effect and the climate change. The activity ended up by students taking an online test to measure their environmental footprint and the steps for reducing their impact on the environment pollution.

On Saturday, the “Access Program” students from north Mitrovica were picking up the litter on the way to Zvecan fortress, near the historical Miner’s Monument.  Residents from this part of the neighborhood including children also joined this activity, which lasted over three hours. Residents supplied Access Program students with additional trash-picking tools but more importantly engaged with them in laughter and fun time.

These type of community activities will be organized in the future, as CBM is committed to get youth involved in the community life and encourage them to take action for the common good. Youth is a catalyst for change which is much needed in the Mitrovica region and its complex context.
